Our History and Commitment at Southland Dodge

Southland Dodge was founded in July 1968 by Joe Teuton Jr., Jeff Teuton, and Dennis Oncale. Joe and Dennis brought their expertise as experienced auto technicians from Downtown Auto Service on Lafayette Street, while Jeff contributed his business knowledge as a graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University’s Business Administration program. Together, and as avid drag racers all under 30 years old, they launched the dealership at 505 Sunset Avenue, featuring a one-car showroom and a 10-car parking lot. Their passion for racing helped drive strong early sales of Dodge Superbees, Chargers, and Challengers.

In 1972, Southland Dodge moved to 1119 Barrow Street (now Bluewater Rubber and Gasket), where sales increased significantly. The 1970s saw rising demand for pickup trucks and full-size vans. In 1978, the dealership expanded its franchises to include Chrysler and Plymouth and relocated to its current location at 6161 West Park Avenue. Sales grew again, supported by a booming oilfield economy.
During the 1980s oilfield downturn, Southland Dodge adapted by focusing on pickup trucks, factory “program cars,” and minivans, becoming, at one point, the largest Ram Charger SUV dealer in the world. From 1982 to 1993, International trucks were also sold here. In 1982, a collision center was added at the original Sunset Avenue location.

The 1990s brought further expansion, including a new showroom addition, a used car building, and a racing facility. In 2007, Southland Dodge proudly added the Jeep franchise, followed by Fiat in 2016. Today, the legacy continues with Jeff’s son, Frank Teuton, leading the dealership, making Southland Dodge one of the longest single-family-owned Dodge stores in the country
